Understanding the treatment

Teeth Whitening: what it involves and who it is for

How does whitening work?

Whitening lightens the colour of natural teeth. The clinic uses a recent laser whitening technology, which usually lightens teeth by 2 to 3 shades. The method is designed to be gentle and to spare the enamel. The result depends on each person: tooth thickness, enamel porosity, dental condition and eating habits, which also affect how long the effect lasts. It usually lasts 5 to 6 months, before a gradual return to the natural shade.

  • Works only on natural teeth
  • Result varies from tooth to tooth
  • Effect fades after a few months
  • Changes neither shape nor alignment

Who is it for?

  • Teeth yellowed or darkened by tea, coffee, tobacco…
  • People happy with the shape of their teeth but not their colour
  • Healthy teeth and gums
Options

Possible solutions

The choice is made with the dentist, based on the examination and your expectations.

  • Laser whitening

An in-clinic session in which the product applied to the teeth is activated by laser. Usually lightens by 2 to 3 shades.

  • Scaling and polishing

They remove tartar and some surface stains; they can be done before whitening.

  • Porcelain veneers or crowns

For a lasting colour that does not change over time, or when whitening is not very effective (greyish teeth).

Materials and technology

How the treatment is prepared

  • Recent laser technology

Laser light activates the whitening product; the method is designed to spare the enamel and limit sensitivity.

  • Shade measurement

The shade is recorded with a shade guide before and after the session, to see how much lighter the teeth are.

Steps

How the treatment unfolds

Durations are indicative; your schedule is set after the examination.

  1. Before travelling

    1. Remote pre-assessment

You send photos of your smile and, if you have one, a recent X-ray. A dentist replies with an initial opinion, the possible options and any questions to clarify. The final plan is only drawn up after the examination at the clinic.

  2. 2. Examination

The dentist checks your teeth and gums and the cause of the stains, and tells you whether whitening is likely to work. Scaling may be suggested first.

  3. 3. Laser whitening session

The gums are protected, then the product is applied to the teeth and activated by laser.

  4. 4. Result and advice

The new shade is compared with the starting shade, and you are given advice for the following days.

Benefits

What this treatment can offer

  • Lighter teeth

Usually 2 to 3 shades lighter on food and tobacco stains.

  • A gentle method

Designed to spare the tooth enamel.

  • An honest opinion beforehand

The dentist tells you beforehand whether your stains respond well to whitening, or whether another option is better suited.

Health information

What to know before deciding

Risks and points to consider

  • Some people may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum discomfort after the session.
  • Teeth greyed by antibiotic treatment (tetracycline) respond little or not at all to whitening.
  • Veneers, crowns and fillings do not whiten: a difference in shade with the natural teeth may appear.
  • The effect is temporary: teeth gradually return to their natural colour, usually after 5 to 6 months.
  • Tell the dentist about any medication, allergies and health conditions (diabetes, bleeding disorders, smoking…): they can change the plan or affect healing.

Aftercare

  • For the next 48 hours, limit coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and strongly coloured foods.
  • Your eating habits affect how long the result lasts: fewer staining foods, a longer-lasting effect.
  • If you feel sensitivity, a toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help; let us know if it persists.
  • Brush twice a day, use floss or interdental brushes, and plan regular check-ups with a dentist.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about this treatment

  • How long does whitening last?

The result usually lasts 5 to 6 months. After that, teeth gradually return to their natural colour. How long it lasts depends notably on your habits (coffee, tea, tobacco) and on enamel porosity.
  • How many shades lighter will my teeth get?

With the laser whitening used at the clinic, usually 2 to 3 shades. The result varies with tooth thickness, enamel porosity and dental condition.
  • Does whitening work on all teeth?

No. It works on teeth yellowed or darkened by tea, coffee or tobacco. It is less effective, or ineffective, on teeth that turned grey after antibiotic treatment (tetracycline), and it does not work on porcelain veneers or crowns.
  • Does whitening damage enamel?

The laser method used is designed to be gentle and spare the enamel. Temporary sensitivity may still occur in some people; mention it to the dentist if your teeth are already sensitive.
  • Whitening or veneers?

Whitening lightens natural teeth for a few months. If you want a colour that does not change over time, or also want to change the shape of your teeth, porcelain veneers or crowns are more suitable.
  • How much does teeth whitening cost in Turkey?

As a guide, laser teeth whitening costs 200 € at the clinic in Antalya. A prior examination checks that your teeth are suitable (decay, crowns, tetracycline stains); the final price is set out in your quote.
  • What is included in the quote?

The quote includes transfers (airport, hotel, clinic), the panoramic X-ray and diagnosis, local anaesthesia and the necessary medication. The hotel is also included above a certain quote amount; the conditions are set out on the Prices page.
