Understanding the treatment

Dental Crowns: what it involves and who it is for

What is a dental crown?

A crown is a ceramic cap that fully covers the tooth. It strengthens and protects the tooth and gives it an even shape, size and colour. To fit it, the tooth is prepared: it is reduced on all sides. Crowns offer aesthetics comparable to veneers, but they are stronger because they surround the whole tooth; they are the other method used to create a Hollywood Smile. They are made to respect the anatomy of your teeth, and their colour does not change over time.

  • Straight, aligned teeth of even shape and size
  • Even, lasting colour
  • Can correct a tooth's position
  • Several connected crowns form a bridge

Who is it for?

  • Misaligned teeth
  • Damaged or broken teeth
  • Teeth with receding gums or worn teeth
  • Heavily restored or weakened teeth
  • One or more missing teeth (bridge)
Options

Possible solutions

The choice is made with the dentist, based on the examination and your expectations.

  • Metal-ceramic crown

A metal base (cobalt-chrome, nickel-free) that makes it strong, fully covered with white ceramic so the metal does not show.

  • Zirconia crown

Metal-free, with a strong zirconia base. Biocompatible, translucent and light, it is recommended for the front teeth, in the smile line.

  • Pure-ceramic E.max crown

The thinnest and most translucent, for a very natural look. Having no base, it is more fragile and not recommended for molars.

  • Crown bridge

Several crowns joined in one block, supported by the neighbouring teeth, to replace one or more missing teeth. A fixed, aesthetic option and an alternative to an implant.

Materials and technology

How the treatment is prepared

  • CAD/CAM manufacturing

Zirconia crowns are designed and produced by computer (CAD/CAM, computer-aided design and manufacturing).

  • Vita ceramic and zirconia

The ceramic and zirconia used are from the German brand Vita.

  • Try-ins in the mouth

Before fitting, the crowns are tried in: the bite and the appearance are checked, and any changes are made directly on site.

Steps

How the treatment unfolds

Durations are indicative; your schedule is set after the examination.

  1. Before travelling

    1. Remote pre-assessment

You send photos of your smile and, if you have one, a recent X-ray. A dentist replies with an initial opinion, the possible options and any questions to clarify. The final plan is only drawn up after the examination at the clinic.

  2. Day 1

    2. Examination and choice of material

Clinical examination and panoramic X-ray. The dentist proposes the right type of crown for each tooth (front or back) and the shade is chosen with you.

  3. 3. Tooth preparation

Any necessary treatment is done first, then the tooth is reduced on all sides to make room for the crown. Impressions are sent to the laboratory.

  4. 4. Try-ins

The crowns are tried in to check bite, shape and shade; corrections are made on site.

  5. 5. Final fitting

Once you have approved the result, the crowns or bridge are cemented.

  6. Before departure

    6. Check-up and follow-up

A check-up appointment is scheduled before you leave. Afterwards, the team remains available for your questions, and regular check-ups with a dentist are recommended.

Benefits

What this treatment can offer

  • Tooth protection

The crown covers and strengthens a weakened tooth.

  • Stable colour

An even shade that does not change over time.

  • A fixed solution

Crowns and bridges are fixed and strong: unlike a removable denture, they do not come out.

  • Aesthetic result

Shape and shade adapted to your tooth anatomy and expectations.

Health information

What to know before deciding

Risks and points to consider

  • The tooth is reduced on all sides: the preparation is irreversible.
  • Temporary sensitivity may follow preparation; on a badly affected tooth, root canal treatment may become necessary.
  • E.max crowns are more fragile and are not recommended for molars.
  • A bridge rests on the neighbouring teeth, which also need to be reduced.
  • Whether the treatment is suitable depends on your oral and general health; this can only be confirmed after a clinical and X-ray examination.
  • Tell the dentist about any medication, allergies and health conditions (diabetes, bleeding disorders, smoking…): they can change the plan or affect healing.

Aftercare

  • Clean carefully where the crown meets the gum; under a bridge, use interdental brushes or a suitable floss.
  • Avoid biting very hard objects (ice, fruit stones).
  • Follow the written instructions given by the dentist and contact the team if you have any doubts.
  • Brush twice a day, use floss or interdental brushes, and plan regular check-ups with a dentist.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about this treatment

  • Crown or veneer: what is the difference?

A veneer covers only the front of the tooth, a crown covers it on all sides. The aesthetics are comparable, but a crown is stronger: it suits damaged or misaligned teeth and back teeth.
  • Which type of crown should I choose?

Metal-ceramic is strong; metal-free zirconia is recommended for the front teeth and the smile line; pure E.max ceramic gives the most natural look but is not recommended for molars. The dentist guides you according to the position and condition of each tooth.
  • Do metal-ceramic crowns contain nickel?

No. The base is a nickel-free cobalt-chrome alloy, fully covered with white ceramic so the metal does not show. If you prefer to avoid metal altogether, zirconia or E.max are possible.
  • Can a bridge replace an implant?

It is a possible alternative: several connected crowns rest on the neighbouring teeth to replace the missing tooth. It is fixed, strong and aesthetic, but the neighbouring teeth need to be reduced. The dentist compares both options with you.
  • What happens during the try-ins?

Before final fitting, the crowns are tried in. The bite (how the teeth close together) and the appearance are checked; if changes are needed, they are made on site until you are happy with the result.
  • How much does a dental crown cost in Turkey?

As a guide, at the Antalya clinic: metal-ceramic crown 120 €, zirconia crown 190 €, E.max ceramic crown 200 €. The type and number of crowns depend on your situation; the final price is set out in your quote, drawn up after the clinical examination.
  • What is included in the quote?

The quote includes transfers (airport, hotel, clinic), the panoramic X-ray and diagnosis, local anaesthesia and the necessary medication. The hotel is also included above a certain quote amount; the conditions are set out on the Prices page.
