Porcelain Veneers: what it involves and who it is for

What is a porcelain veneer?

A veneer is a thin piece of ceramic that covers the front of the tooth. It is recommended to correct minor imperfections: colour, stains, shape or size of the teeth. Placed on several teeth, veneers can also create the Hollywood Smile effect. To fit them, about 1 mm is removed from the front surface of the tooth, then the veneer is bonded. Ceramic does not yellow: on discoloured teeth, veneers give a white, bright shade that stays stable over time.

  • Zirconia-ceramic veneers

    Thin, light and aesthetic. Their zirconia base makes them strong. Materials from the Vita brand (Germany).

  • Pure-ceramic E.max veneers

    A natural, refined result. Made entirely of ceramic, without a zirconia base, they are a little more fragile.

  • Veneers at the front, crowns at the back

    To redo 10 to 12 teeth or the whole jaw: veneers on the front teeth and crowns on the back teeth, which are stronger for chewing.

How the treatment is prepared

  • About 1 mm of preparation

    Only the front surface of the tooth is reduced, by about 1 mm, to make room for the veneer without extra bulk.

  • Custom shape and shade

    Shape and shade are adapted to your natural teeth and face, then checked in the mouth at the try-in.

  • Vita materials (Germany)

    The ceramic and zirconia used come from the German manufacturer Vita.

How the treatment unfolds

Durations are indicative; your schedule is set after the examination.

  1. Before travelling

    1. Remote pre-assessment

    You send photos of your smile and, if you have one, a recent X-ray. A dentist replies with an initial opinion, the possible options and any questions to clarify. The final plan is only drawn up after the examination at the clinic.

  2. Day 1

    2. Examination and choice

    Clinical examination and X-ray. The dentist confirms that veneers are suitable (well-aligned, healthy teeth) or suggests crowns for some teeth. Shade and shape are discussed with you.

  3. 3. Preparation and impressions

    The teeth are reduced by about 1 mm on their front surface, then impressions are taken for the laboratory.

  4. 4. Try-in

    The veneers are tried in: shape, shade and bite are checked, and adjustments are made on site.

  5. 5. Bonding

    Once you have approved them, the veneers are permanently bonded.

  6. Before departure

    6. Check-up and follow-up

    A check-up appointment is scheduled before you leave. Afterwards, the team remains available for your questions, and regular check-ups with a dentist are recommended.

What to know before deciding

Risks and points to consider

  • Enamel reduction is irreversible.
  • E.max veneers, having no base, are more fragile: knocks and tooth grinding increase the risk of cracking or debonding.
  • Veneers do not correct misalignment: crowns are then needed.
  • Temporary sensitivity may occur after preparation.
  • Whether the treatment is suitable depends on your oral and general health; this can only be confirmed after a clinical and X-ray examination.
  • Tell the dentist about any medication, allergies and health conditions (diabetes, bleeding disorders, smoking…): they can change the plan or affect healing.

Aftercare

  • Avoid biting hard objects (ice, fruit stones, pens) and opening packaging with your teeth.
  • If you grind or clench your teeth, a night guard can protect the veneers.
  • Follow the written instructions given by the dentist and contact the team if you have any doubts.
  • Brush twice a day, use floss or interdental brushes, and plan regular check-ups with a dentist.

    Veneers suit well-aligned, healthy front teeth, to correct colour, stains, shape or size. Crowns, which cover the tooth on all sides, are stronger: they are preferred for back teeth and for damaged or misaligned teeth.

  • Zirconia or E.max: what is the difference?

    Zirconia-ceramic veneers have a zirconia base that makes them strong while remaining thin and light. E.max veneers, made of pure ceramic, look very natural and refined but are a little more fragile. The dentist advises you according to your teeth and habits.

  • How many veneers are needed?

    Veneers are mainly suited to the central teeth, usually the 6 to 8 front teeth. To redo 10 to 12 teeth or the whole jaw, veneers at the front are combined with crowns at the back.

  • Do the teeth need to be reduced?
